This project uses a lifting AGV with an onboard transfer platform to automate the movement of stacked component trays between production areas.
Instead of requiring operators to move individual trays or manually push loaded carts between processes, the AGV docks directly with the production equipment, receives the complete tray stack, transports it through the factory, and then aligns with the downstream transfer station.
The video demonstrates a complete intralogistics sequence from automatic line-side loading to mobile transport and destination docking, using standardized trays as the material carrier.
Automatic Docking with the Upstream Production Equipment
The transport cycle begins with the AGV approaching the upstream production equipment with an empty onboard platform.
The vehicle travels to the designated transfer position and aligns itself beside the equipment interface. Accurate docking is important because the onboard carrying surface must match the material-transfer position of the production line before the tray stack can move onto the AGV.
Once the vehicle reaches the correct position, the production equipment and mobile platform form a temporary transfer interface.
The initial sequence can be summarized as:
AGV arrival -> station alignment -> docking confirmation -> tray transfer
This allows the material to leave the upstream process without requiring an operator to manually transfer the trays onto a cart.
Transferring Stacked Component Trays onto the AGV
The material in this project is organized in reusable plastic trays.
Each tray contains multiple components positioned in individual cavities, and several loaded trays are stacked together before transportation.
During loading, the complete stack moves from the production equipment onto the AGV's onboard carrying area.
Transporting the trays as a stack allows a larger batch of components to move during one logistics mission while preserving the organized tray format used by the production process.
The material flow at the loading station becomes:
production equipment -> stacked trays -> AGV onboard platform
The AGV therefore acts as both the transportation vehicle and the temporary mobile carrier between the two automated interfaces.
Carrying a Full Tray Stack Through the Factory
After loading is complete, the AGV leaves the production equipment and begins the transport mission.
The video shows the vehicle carrying multiple stacked trays through an open factory environment, including production aisles and connecting passages between work areas.
The tray stack remains supported on the vehicle throughout transportation.
This is different from logistics based on loose boxes or individual parts. The production materials remain inside their original process trays, which means their orientation and separation are preserved during movement.
The AGV transports the complete batch without requiring the parts to be repacked for internal logistics.
A typical material flow is therefore:
process tray -> tray stack -> mobile transport -> downstream process
Moving Material Between Separated Production Areas
The transport route extends beyond the immediate machine area.
After leaving the upstream equipment, the AGV travels through several sections of the facility before reaching the receiving point.
This allows automated material flow to connect processes that are physically separated within the factory.
Fixed conveyors can be effective when two stations are permanently connected over a short distance, but longer routes through shared production areas require substantially more fixed infrastructure.
In this project, the mobile platform provides the connection between the two process areas while the tray-transfer interfaces remain located only at the pickup and delivery points.
The AGV therefore provides the long-distance part of the material flow without requiring a continuous mechanical conveyor between the two production processes.
Docking with the Downstream Transfer Station
At the destination, the loaded AGV approaches a dedicated receiving interface.
The video shows the vehicle positioning the tray stack adjacent to a stainless-steel transfer station equipped with a conveyor structure.
The AGV aligns its onboard load with the receiving equipment so that the tray stack can be handed off as part of the downstream material flow.
This destination interface completes the mobile transport stage:
transport -> destination alignment -> station docking -> downstream transfer
The standardized tray stack provides a defined load format at both ends, while the AGV provides the transportation between those interfaces.
Batch Transport Using Standardized Production Trays
An important feature of this project is that the production tray serves simultaneously as a process carrier and an intralogistics carrier.
Components remain inside individual tray cavities during transportation, and multiple trays are combined into one stack for batch movement.
This avoids additional handling steps such as removing parts from process trays, loading them into separate transport containers, and repacking them again at the next process.
Instead, the same tray format can move from the production equipment onto the AGV and continue toward the next manufacturing stage.
This creates a relatively direct handoff between production automation and intralogistics.
Connecting Production Equipment with Mobile Material Handling
The complete operating sequence demonstrated in the project can be summarized as:
empty AGV travels to upstream station -> automatic docking -> stacked trays transfer onto AGV -> AGV leaves station -> autonomous transport through factory -> arrival at downstream area -> alignment with receiving station -> tray handoff
The project demonstrates how a lifting or transfer AGV can become part of the production material flow rather than operating only as an independent transport vehicle.
By combining automatic station docking, batch tray transportation, and line-side material transfer, the system connects separated production processes while allowing each production station to maintain its own fixed automation equipment.
For manufacturing environments that use reusable trays to move components between processes, this type of AGV provides a practical approach to line-to-line material transfer and automated intralogistics.
